What To Check When Hiring An Electrician

We interviewed our Guelph Electrician friends in from Canada and to confirm what home owners should check before hiring an electrician in their city. Electrical work is one of these things that you don’t want to skimp on. It may seem easy to have pot lights installed but what you are missing is all the building codes and safety standards that are being followed when a trained and licensed electrician does it. Electrical work that is done incorrectly can result in home damage, fire or even death. So next time you are thinking about saving a few hundred dollars by hiring handyman joe off Craigslist, please think twice. Save your money on decision where your home and families lives are not put in danger. 

Note that the names and governing bodies of the documents mentioned bay be different depending on what city and state you live in but the same concept applies.

  1. Ask if the electrician holds a current ECRA/ESA licence for electrical work. You can search their  location in the database here and find the electrician’s name a license number.
  2. Ask if the electrician if there are any permits or inspections required. And if so if they can show you that they have secured them before beginning any work.
  3. Ask for a copy of the ESA Certificate of Inspection from the electrician once the work is complete.
